We have just had an extremely hot dry summer and many crops have produced grain with low thousand grain weights since I have heard that wheat growth stops above a certain temperature even if adequate soil moisture is available.  However, researchers in rice have identified 4 genes that seem to help plants overcome these obstacles and produce reasonable yields even under drought conditions.  Perhaps similar work could result in wheat that can also tolerate what appears to be the new ‘normal’.  For details of the research see: https://www.isaaa.org/kc/cropbiotechupdate/article/default.asp?ID=22001

New Approvals by Company:

Adama

  • The new fungicide mixture launched by BASF recently as Elanvy (M21891, azoxystrobin + mefentrifluconazole) is now also approved for Adama as Piotrol (M21932) and Impelos (M21920).

  • Agform Ltd has duplicated the metamitron product called Nanotron from Agform Tech under a new MAPP No (M20785) which is approved until 29/2/2028 while the original (M21172) lasts until 30/5/2029.

  • Has broadened the range of Miravis products with the approval of Miravis Era (M21924, prothioconazole + pydiflumetafen) which is approved for disease control in a wide range of cereals in GB only.  Currently it is listed as PAR but I have requested a copy of the label and confirmation of intention to market so that I can upgrade it to a full entry.
  • Axial Pro (M19010, pinoxaden) is now approved for use on amenity grassland and managed amenity turf for control of weed grasses when applied between March and October in addition to its use on wheat and barley.

EAMUs added:  With BASF plc morphing into BASF Agricultural Solutions (UK) Ltd and the re-registration of most products under new MAPP Nos for the new company name, many new EAMUs will be required since EAMUs are MAPP No specific.  Some of these are detailed in the list of new EAMUs below.

  • Arizona (M21116, folpet) has 3 EAMUs allowing treatment of various diseases in ornamentals, protected ornamentals, container-grown stock and hardy ornamentals including plants under permanent protection with full enclosure.
  • Boni Protect (M20734, Aureobasidium pullulans) has an EAMU allowing treatment of cherries post-harvest to control storage rots in GB only with a 1 day harvest interval.
  • Delfin WG (M18452, bacillus thuringiensis kurstak) has 9 new EAMUs which replace the existing 9 EAMUs that expire 31/12/2026.  One wonders why they didn’t just amend the expiry date since they are identical to the originals with different numbers allocated to GB use and use in NI.
  • Elestein (M21671, boscalid + pyraclostrobin) has 18 EAMUs allowing treatment of various diseases in a wide range of horticultural crops and berry fruit.
  • Medax Max (M21747, prohexadione-calcium + trinexepac-ethyl) has 4 EAMUs for use in spring rye and in grassland.  GB and NI use has separate EAMU numbers due to differing expiry dates.

  • Signum (M21677, boscalid + pyraclostrobin) is the new approval for Signum and it now has a further 16 EAMUs to mke 34 in total!  Theses cover disease control in a wide range of fruit and veg crops.
