Why BCPC’s Online Pesticide Manual leads the field

Why BCPC’s Online Pesticide Manual leads the field

10th June 2026

We caution users to be wary of data on pesticides found on the internet; many of these are incorrect and the data are often actually for a derivative of a pesticide (e.g., an ester instead of the acid) or are calculated and not measured.

All data included in the PM have been reviewed by the Editor. Some other databases include data obtained solely through internet searches.

Data in the PM are presented in formats which allow for simple comparisons between active ingredients. Common units are used for each data field. e.g. mg/l for water solubility.

Data in the PM are presented without “editorial” or interpretative comments (e.g. “highly polar”, “moderately toxic”). It is our goal to provide all available information on a particular data set and allow the user to interpret the data as they see fit.

  1. The Pesticide Manual is continuously updated with the latest available data (PPDB updated quarterly).
  2. Extensive search capabilities included with annual licence.
  3. The PM includes all new active ingredients as well as those pesticides under development.
  4. The PM includes full data sets for esters and isomeric components of active ingredients (CAS and IUPAC names, structure identifiers, CAS RN, all available physical chemical properties)
  5. The PM has the most extensive set of validated physical chemical property data available.  All data provided have been measured, not calculated.
  6. Data are included in the PM only if they are either:
    • provided by the company which either develops the pesticide or currently maintains the regulatory package
    • published by a regulatory body (e.g., EFSA, EPA, APVMA)
    • published in a peer-reviewed journal or book.
