As part of a packed two-day programme, the first afternoon of this year’s BCPC Congress builds on a morning of forward looking discussions around the future of food production and supply. It turns its attention to the critical themes of global trade and how farming practices are evolving in response to climate change and a regulatory shift aimed at reducing pesticide use.
Kicking off the afternoon, Cecilia Pryce, Head of Compliance, Shipping and Research at Openfield, will provide a timely and insightful overview of global grain markets. With geopolitical tensions, climate volatility and shifting trade dynamics all in play, her session will help delegates understand the forces shaping commodity flows and pricing.
Next, Rob Parker from G’s will explore how the industry can build resilience in crop production. His talk will focus on the practicalities of reducing reliance on chemical inputs and rethinking farming systems to better support the integration of biologicals towards a more sustainable agriculture.
After a short break, Mike Rivington from the James Hutton Institute will share insights from his work on ‘smart farms’, demonstrating how field-scale monitoring and modelling can help farmers adapt to environmental pressures and improve decision-making for long-term resilience.
Dick Shaw of CABI will then take us on a global tour of the future of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and pesticide use. With regulatory pressures mounting and resistance on the rise, his session will highlight innovative approaches and international perspectives on pest control.
Rounding off the afternoon, Professor Dan Bebber from the University of Exeter will examine how climate change is reshaping pest and disease risks in the UK. Drawing on cutting-edge research, he’ll reveal how shifting weather patterns are influencing the spread and severity of threats to crop health.
