News Releases

18 February 2002

Widely recognised as the leading international event for the world-wide crop protection industry, this year's British Crop Production Council (BCPC) Conference theme will feature Pests & Diseases.

From 18 - 21 November 2002, the Hilton Metropole Hotel in the city of Brighton, will play host to an expected 1,500 technical delegates along with a similar number of commercial and technical managers from around the world who come to visit the Exhibition, network with colleagues, conduct business and keep in touch with industry events.

Focussing on Food
Food supply and food safety provide a high profile theme which runs throughout the Conference. Getting the event rolling will be the highly topical Monday Symposium that will consider 'The Global Challenge - Sustainable Food Production'. And following on from last year's highly successful Marketing Seminar, there will be a similar event, supported by Crops magazine. This will take the theme of 'Crop Protection under Licence - the Challenge' and will provide the opportunity for interactive discussion.

Each year, the Conference programme opens with a key note lecture - the Bawden Memorial Lecture named after Sir Frederick Bawden, the first President of the BCPC. Complementing the food theme, this year, the 29th lecture entitled "Risks and benefits of crop protection strategies - Food safety aspects" will be presented by Dr Jørgen Schlundt, Co-ordinator of the Food Safety Programme, World Health Organisation (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland.

An important part of every BCPC Conference is the presentation of new compounds for pest and disease management. Practical approaches and advances to pest and disease control in a wide range of crops including organic crops, and the potential role of transgenic crops, environmental factors and technology will also be addressed.

Contributions to both platform and poster presentations are now being sought from researchers carrying out work relevant to the Conference sessions.

A Chance to Speak
Offers of papers can be made via the 'Call for Papers form' on the BCPC website at www.bcpc.org/bcpcconference2002/offerpaper.htm and these must reach the Programme Committee Chairman, Dr Terry Clark, by 20 March 2002.

A Place to Meet
Visitors to the event should also ensure that they take time out to visit the many supporting stands in the restyled BCPC Exhibition 2002 which attracts a range of organisations involved in the supply of goods and services to the global crop protection industry. The exhibition is open for the duration of the Conference.

The BCPC Pests & Diseases website at www.bcpc.org is regularly updated and viewers can now preview the programme or, offer a paper. Later on in the year, delegates will be able to, register for the Conference and book hotel rooms from these pages.
