News Releases

10 November 2003

The thirteenth edition of the authoritative and independent source of global pesticide information, The Pesticide Manual, and its accompanying, fully searchable CD, The e-Pesticide Manual are now available from BCPC. Edited by Dr Clive Tomlin, the information within this new edition has been completely revised and updated.

Since the publication of the previous edition three years ago, the entire data set has been reviewed and brought up to date. The Pesticide Manual now contains 1,469 profiles – 858 main entries and 611 abbreviated entries covering superseded products. In this edition more than 50 new entries have been added, including 30 new synthetic molecules and a further 13 minor substances as well as several more pheromones. Toxicological and physico-chemical data have been revised in line with new data supplied by manufacturers. Classification codes, based on those issued by the Insecticides Resistance Action Committee have also been added, to complement the existing herbicide and fungicide codes. To reflect the changes and further consolidation within the industry, the directory of companies has been totally updated and now lists over 500 organisations.

The Pesticide Manual is a valuable reference book for anyone working in the crop protection and agricultural industry. The entries cover key product groups: herbicides, fungicides, acaricides, nematicides, plant growth regulators, herbicide safeners, repellents, synergists, pheromones, beneficial microbial and invertebrate agents plus rodenticides and animal ectoparasiticides. Each main entry contains comprehensive information including chemical structure, nomenclature, mode of action, toxicological data and environmental fate information.

Also just launched is The Pesticide Manual’s own dedicated website. To be found at www.pesticidemanual.com the site not only details the content of the book and CD, but visitors can also download sample main entries and view a demonstration of the CD.

Speedy access to information
The e-Pesticide Manual allows users to access and search all the data that appears in the book on the click of their computer mouse. It includes a much larger set of product names, bringing the totals to more than 8,000 current and 2,000 discontinued names, plus additional information on superseded substances. The CD software for PCs is user-friendly, enabling users to undertake their own complex tailor-made searches. Information can be customised to download or print, direct links can be made to websites of manufacturers and crop protection organisations and chemical structure graphics can be exported for use in presentations. Network users can export search results for use in spreadsheets.

The data in The e-Pesticide Manual are updated annually with each new edition including the latest new pesticides, revised company details and upgraded software facilities. Version 3.1 will be published in November 2004 and 3.2 in November 2005.
