News Releases BCPC to enlarge its remit 7 October 2002 The British Crop Production Council (BCPC) is to widen its remit to encompass all aspects of crop production. This move is an acknowledgment of the increasingly integrated demands of sustainable agriculture. The growing of high quality crops now requires a total approach to production, which recognises the needs not only of the farmer, but also of the consumer and the environment. BCPC feels that the need has never been greater to achieve a balanced picture of agriculture taking into account the scientific, technical, economic and social facets of crop production. Over many years, BCPC has established a reputation as an independent gathering of opinion formers - a reputation BCPC intends to build upon with an expansion of its activities in the arena of public debate. In addition, BCPC aims to increase its input into the formation of government strategies, discussion documents and plans. Coupled to this BCPC will place more emphasis on European affairs. The role and membership of the highly productive BCPC Expert Working Groups will continue. Reflecting this move, membership will be expanded to cover additional areas of expertise and partnerships will be sought with like-minded organisations. BCPC welcomes all individuals and organisations to join and contribute to this vitally important topic. The executive board has also agreed that in future, with this change of role, the organisation will be known only by its initials, namely BCPC. Newly elected Chairman of BCPC, Dr Barry Thomas said "the change of our remit and name may only appear as a subtle shift, but in future farmers, growers, scientists and the wider public will have easy access to an organisation which provides an unbiased and in-depth approach to the practice and debate surrounding crop production." Conferences, such as the annual BCPC Conference, symposia and publications organised by its established trading arm, BCPE Ltd will continue. For further information contact:
