Garden Detective CD

Garden Detective CD-Rom

News Releases

13 May 2003

If something is attacking your apples, torturing your tomatoes or plaguing your potatoes – authoritative help is at hand in the form of a new CD-ROM that identifies nearly 600 different pests, diseases and weeds affecting outdoor fruit and vegetables grown in Britain.

The Garden Detective CD operates on IBM compatible PC’s and contains more than 1,200 high quality photographs and line drawings of pests, diseases and weeds. The CD makes it easy to identify the cause of a problem – and details the various methods available to solve it.

It is produced by the independent British Crop Production Council, with inputs from leading UK experts, and is aimed at amateur gardeners and allotment holders. Garden Detective is also ideal for use in the nursery and horticultural industries, as well as by smallholders.

The CD is extremely easy to install and operate, with navigation around the system self explanatory. A useful user guide is supplied with each CD and there is an e-mail help line for users experiencing problems.

Chris Todd, managing director of British Crop Protection Enterprises, explained: “Now fruit and vegetable gardeners and allotment holders will be able to track down and identify the cause of problems affecting their crops, and determine how best to deal with them. Information is provided on non-chemical methods of control and beneficial organisms, as well as pesticides listed by their active ingredients. Although product brand names are not used, information is given to help gardeners recognise products.”

Users are able to download updated control sections from the web, keeping up with changes in the chemicals available for gardeners to use and information on new biological control methods.

Garden Detective offers a variety of different routes to track down a particular problem, depending on how much the user knows about the particular problem. Gardeners unsure about the weed, pest or disease can compare photographs, or select relevant descriptions from a list of keywords, to narrow-down identification leading to the answer.

Solutions, pictures and other useful information are included in fact sheets on each pest species. Garden Detective is available at £20 (including VAT postage & packaging) from BCPC Publications, Bear Farm, Binfield, Bracknell, Berks RG42 5QE Tel: +44 (0) 118 934 2727 Fax: +44 (0) 118 934 1998.
