BCPC has awarded its highest accolade, the BCPC Medal to Dr David Anthony Evans and Harry M Lawson. The presentations were made, by BCPC President Hugh Oliver-Bellasis, on the opening afternoon of the BCPC International Congress – Crop Science & Technology 2003, held at the SECC in Glasgow between 10 to 12 November 2003. BCPC medals are awarded to people who have made an outstanding contribution to crop protection.

"I am both honoured and surprised over the award of a BCPC Medal," said Dr David A Evans, as he accepted this award of industry recognition. "Whereas I really shall miss the annual November visit to Brighton, I wish BCPC every success in the new venue and I am looking forward very much to the enjoyment of catching up with the new science and old friends at the Congress in Glasgow."

After qualifying with a BSc, MSc and PhD in chemistry from Manchester University, David Evans went over to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA as a research associate. Following a spell as research fellow at Cambridge University he then spent eight years as a university lecturer of organic chemistry at the University of Southampton.

In 1979 David joined Fisons (later FBC and Schering) as Head of Chemistry and through his enthusiasm and experience, he become Director of Research. In 1989 he took up the post of Research General Manager at ICI Agrochemicals at Jealott’s Hill and later Director of Research and Development. Here he encouraged the use of cutting edge science in R&D and the interaction between the various disciplines through project team-work. In the late 1990s he became responsible for biotech resources in Zeneca (now Syngenta) and their integration with chemical approaches to crop protection. At the BCPC Conference – Pests & Diseases 2002, David gave the keynote Bawden lecture entitled: New Era, New Challenges, New Solutions. He retired in April 2003, but has continued his involvement with consultancies and university appointments.

Harry M Lawson has a life-time of experience in the horticultural sector. After graduating from Glasgow University and then taking a MAgSc degree at Massey University, New Zealand, Harry was appointed R& D Herbicide Team Leader for Dow Chemical Co in the UK. In 1966 he joined the Scottish Horticultural (now Crop) Research Institute (SHRI) where he was in charge of research on interactions between weeds, herbicides and horticultural crops. As the focus of the Institute moved more into arable crops, Harry’s remit expanded and enabling collaborative projects with R&D colleagues throughout the UK.

After retiring from SCRI in 1994 he took on the post as technical editor of Weed Research transforming it into a successful publication. He retired from this in December 2002. In 1989 he was elected Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and in 1977 the Scottish Horticultural Medal for services to horticulture.

He has been involved with BCPC since 1960 through the BCPC Weeds Conferences held in Brighton, where he has presented papers as well as organising and chairing sessions He has also contributed to several editions of the Weed Control Handbook. "I am delighted and honoured, if not a little taken aback, at being awarded a BCPC Medal," said Mr Lawson. "Although, I am particularly pleased to receive the award in Scotland as a Scot, and in Glasgow as a former graduate of Glasgow University."
