Explore physical sciences with the newly launched Zola and Zilo books
|
News Releases BCPC launches into Space 22 June 2009 Following the success of its series of ‘Beginners Life Science' books, BCPC has now launched into space with a second series of five books to support Key Stage 1 ‘Beginners Physical Science'. The books promote physical sciences learning as stimulating and fascinating fun and offer cross-curricular opportunities to the pupil and teacher. After very positive comments from the Life Science series one Primary School Science team said, “A companion series for physics topics would be very valuable to us. Physical sciences topics can be very difficult to teach and get the principles across to children. Having something in an exciting story format would be most helpful.” Similarly one Primary School head teacher said after using the Life Science series. “A complementary Physical Science series would be excellent to stimulate science activities. They are pitched at an eminently suitable level for the age ranges and it is fun how the books feature non-fiction text within them to keep the children's interest. The labelled pictures and glossary of words are also very useful as is the cross-curricular nature of the texts.” In response to encouraging comments on the Life Science series BCPC commissioned the new series to provide an imaginative and innovative approach to Materials and Physical Sciences at KS1. The entertaining and playful stories follow the adventures of two friendly alien visitors Zola and Zilo who travel to planet earth in search of some answers. Through the stories, children are introduced to the basic scientific concepts of: materials and their properties; electricity; light and dark; sound and forces and motion. Educational advisers were involved throughout the development of the books to ensure that they would work well in the classroom setting and would support self-directed learning and independent reading. The scientific advisers were qualified to ensure the accuracy and quality of material presented at this level and to cover some of the wider topic issues including environmental awareness, conservation, recycling and the sustainability of resources. The ‘Beginners Physical Science' series of books are produced by BCPC Publications and are available to purchase on-line at www.bcpc.org/bookshop. The books cost £5.95 each or £26 for the set of five. As a special launch offer both the Life Science and Physical Science sets are being offered for sale at just £45 for a total of 10 books.
