With over 2000 delegates in attendance representing over 90 nationalities, the XVI International Plant Protection Congress and BCPC International Congress and Exhibition lived up to its billing as the world’s premier event for the crop production industry. In addition many commercial visitors attended business meetings and events over the four days of the meeting. Overall attendance was at its highest level since 2003.
Staged in Glasgow last week and featuring a packed four-day programme, co-organisers the BCPC said it was delighted with the overall success of the event. "This year’s event, held in conjunction with IAPPS’ XVI International Plant Protection Congress, contained the largest and most complex programme of sessions for a decade,” said Dr Colin Ruscoe, chairman and exhibitions director for BCPE.
According to Dr Ruscoe, in addition to the four-day Congress which itself featured 40 platform sessions and 160 speakers, there were over 100 exhibitor stands, more than 50 hospitality suites and six Commercial Seminars for delegates to attend. “Together with the Civic Reception and the outstanding Agrow Awards, co-hosted by BCPC, this made for an unprecedented event.
“It is gratifying that we have had nothing but compliments from all participants,” he added.
IPPC Programme Committee chairman, professor Phil Russell said that the whole event was “clearly enjoyed by all delegates”, particularly with the variety and quality of Session topics available to attend.
“ My key objective prior to the event was wanting to stimulate delegates to think about what they had heard. I came away confident that we had achieved, or even surpassed, that objective and believe that delegates will not only be thinking about what they heard but will share their thoughts with colleagues during discussions.”
Exhibiting companies featured a strong representation from plant nutrition and a record number of exhibitors from contract R&D, in addition to formulation, packaging and application sectors. New exhibits this year included control of insect vectors of disease, reflecting the growing importance of the non-crop market, as well as displays on biopesticides and environmental protection.
Cathy Fingleton, Sales Development manager for specialty chemical packaging company, Chesapeake said that it used the exhibition to reaffirm product profiles to the industry. “This was the first time we had exhibited our products at the event under the Chesapeake brand and it gave us the opportunity to talk to agrochemical customers and explain that the same products are still available, in addition to new ones.”
Summing up with what he regarded as an “excellent event”, managing director of BCPE, Chris Todd said the scientific programme committee structure ensured that the programme was put together by scientists (all of whom are volunteers) with great experience in programme organisation, “The event was managed by a team of professionals who are experienced in producing and managing a scientific conference.”
