News Releases Global crop production issues raised at Glasgow Congress 13 August 2007 The global crop production industry is facing some of its greatest challenges ever in a world of increasing population, demand for renewable energy and threat of climate change. These issues, and many more, are set to take centre stage at this October’s XVI International Plant Protection Congress, Glasgow, says the President of organisers BCPC (British Crop Production Council). According to Hugh Oliver-Bellasis, President of BCPC, global crop production, both for food and industrial uses, has never been under more pressure with the increase in world population, demand for alternative energy, environmental issues and climate change. "In recognition of these pressures BCPC and IAPPS (International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences) have, with the assistance of many research and commercial organisations, set out to deliver a programme that will be of interest to a worldwide audience of crop production specialists," he says. The Congress will bring industry players together to discuss how expanding biofuel and bioenergy markets may change the agricultural map. It will host new product launches at a time when the frequency of new agrochemical products has slowed, and it will feature more than 40 platform sessions, 160 speakers and 250 poster sessions in the four day programme. Key topics such as responsible stewardship in a world of increasingly sophisticated products and pan-European solutions to food safety issues will also be highlighted at Congress, as will the many influences and pressures that affect practical farming today. "Complementing this programme there will be an international exhibition with displays from many organisations and the opportunity to meet with others at the congress reception and in hospitality suites," says Mr Oliver-Bellasis. "As President of the BCPC I look forward to welcoming everyone to this important Congress in Glasgow, this October." The XVI International Plant Protection Congress, in association with IAPPS and the BCPC International Congress & Exhibition, takes place from October 15-18, 2007 in Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC).
