This year’s XVI International Plant Protection Congress promises to be one of the most comprehensive ever and an essential event for all involved in the global crop protection industry, says organisers British Crop Production Council (BCPC).

Taking place October 15-18, at Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), the Congress will feature more than 40 platform sessions, 160 speakers and 250 poster sessions in the four day programme.
“With over 600 papers originally being offered for the event there has been a magnificent response to the Congress this year and papers have been received from over 60 countries – a fact which underlines the true international nature of the event,” said Professor Phil Russell, chairman, BCPC Programme Committee speaking today in London.

Such was the quantity of offers for papers on some specialist subjects, the Committee agreed to extend the original programme, said Professor Russell. “Over 16 per cent of all offers were based around ‘Biocontrol’, for example, therefore the topic has been expanded from its original two platform sessions to three.

“Also of special note must be the inclusion of an extra symposium: ‘Emerging themes in agroecosystem health and food safety’. This symposium, organised and managed by IAPPS, will run for three consecutive platform sessions with invited speakers and will be open to all Congress delegates,” he said.

Following the opening ceremony on the Monday (15th), which features three Keynote lectures, the Main Sessions begin in earnest covering a wide variety of specialist topics. “We have aimed to provide topics covering traditional and innovative crop protection and specialist aspects of crop production, but there will also be those covering more sociological and ethical aspects of crop protection,” said Professor Russell.

The BCPC anticipates that almost 1000 scientific delegates will attend the Congress in addition to the expected 1250 Exhibition and Hospitality visitors. “Overall it promises to be a very full and exciting Congress,” concluded Professor Russell.

In association with IAPPS (International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences) and the BCPC International Congress & Exhibition, the Congress runs over four days and takes place at Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), October 15-18.
