A new series of beautifully illustrated books has received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from children and teachers alike. The five books under the ‘Beginners Life to Science’ title, supporting Key Stage 1 Life Processes & Living Things curriculum, offer both cross-curricular learning while literally “bringing science to life” for primary school children in years 1, 2 and 3.

According to teachers at St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, Godalming in Surrey, the books hit just the right chord with children in class. “They are a lovely set of stories which capture the imagination,” says Sue Watson, Head of Science at the school. “There’s a good amount of information within each book and the stories move at the right pace with a nice balance of words and pictures. The children read them as interesting stories and picked up the learning without realising it,” she adds.

The books communicate cross-curricular learning points through thought-provoking story telling, stimulating children to pose their own questions, plan their own scientific investigations and enjoy learning. ‘Hannah’s Horse Chestnut’ for example has links with personal, social and health education while there is geography in ‘Trevor’s Magic Trolley’ and a maths link in ‘Katie’s New Kitten’.

While moving away from the standard textbook format, they wrap science in imaginative, illustrated stories highlighting aspects of each of the five main topics listed in the National Curriculum for Science.

Teachers were involved throughout the development process to ensure that the series would work well in a classroom setting, support self-directed learning and provide teachers with flexible and time-saving material. “They

were excellent for class reading, each child read a page while the rest of the class followed,” says Sue Watson. “The children liked the hand-drawn pictures very much – they identify with them more than photos as being nearer to something they can produce or copy.

“These books are a good stimulus to get the children thinking,” she says. “Our Reception Class identified with ‘Jack’s Amazing Animals’ to such an extent that the story was used as the basis for a Form costume play in front of parents,” she says.

The ‘Beginners Life Science’ books are produced by BCPC Publications and are available from its website: www.bcpc.org/bookshop. They cost £5.95 each or £26.00 for a set of five.
