News Releases

26 February 2007

An innovative series of five story books which will help to support science education in primary schools by addressing the current lack of engaging resources designed for use with 5 – 7 year olds is being launched today by The British Crop Production Council (BCPC).

Stephen Howe, Communications Director at BCPC, commented:

"Good science is vital in the area of successful and sustainable food production, but finding good scientists who want to work in that sector is becoming increasingly difficult. The BCPC have developed these resources for primary schools because we feel good scientists should be encouraged from a very early age."

Children tend to be enthusiastic towards science at a young age as they explore the world around them, but their attitudes tend to become less positive when they transfer to secondary school. The DfES therefore regards the primary years as crucial in developing pupils' longer-term interest in science.

The new books are designed to make learning fun and provide a new approach to teaching science to young children. Moving away from the standard textbook format, they wrap science in imaginative-illustrated stories to maximise their appeal to children.

The books can be purchased from BCPC's website at www.bcpc.org/bookshop and cost £5.95 each, or £26 for a set of five. Orders can also be posted to BCPC Publications Sales, 7 Omni Business Centre, Omega Park, Alton, Hampshire GU34 2QD.
