News Releases BCPC Medals Awarded at Pests & Diseases 2002 18 November 2002 BCPC has this year awarded its highest accolade, the BCPC Medal to Professor Clive Edwards, Dr Trevor Lewis CBE and Professor Phil Russell. The presentations were made, by recently elected BCPC President Mr Hugh Oliver-Bellasis on the opening morning of the BCPC Crop Protection Conference – Pests & Diseases, 18 to 21 November 2002. BCPC medals are awarded to people who have made an outstanding contribution to crop protection. |

Professor Clive Edwards is recognised as a world authority on earthworms and his book Ecology and Biology of Earthworms is now in its third edition. After graduating from Bristol University and then taking a MS and PhD at the University of Wisconsin, USA, Clive was appointed to the UK Ministry of Agriculture. In 1960 he joined Rothamsted Experimental Station where his work focussed on research into the effects of agricultural chemicals on the soil environment. From 1966 to 1968 he was visiting professor at Purdue University, USA and was appointed as Chair of the Department of Entomology at the Ohio State University, USA in 1985. In 2001 he presented the Ohio State University Distinguished Lecture The Future of Human Populations; Energy, Food and Water Availability in the 21st Century – one of the university’s highest honours for a faculty member. His involvement with BCPC has been his outstanding contribution to all the Pests & Diseases Conferences since their inception and his involvement to many of the Weeds Conferences. |

After qualifying with
a first-class honours degree in Agricultural Zoology with Crop Husbandry
at the University of Nottingham, Dr Trevor Lewis
went on to gain a PhD at London. Following a spell as a university
demonstrator, he then embarked on a career at Rothamsted Experimental
Station that was to span over 30 years which, through his enthusiasm
and experience, led him to become Head of the Research Station in
1986 as well as Director of the Institute of Arable Crops Research
(IACR). He has lectured and presented papers world-wide, published
numerous scientific papers and books on his particular interests,
the biology and ecology of thrips and leaf-cutting ants, insect distribution
in crops |

After graduating from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth with a BSc and PhD, Professor Phil Russell, embarked on a career that was lead him to become an authority on fungicide use and the management of resistance. In 1977 he joined Fisons as team leader in the mycology department. His career developed during the company changes to FBC Limited, Schering, AgrEvo and then Aventis, providing him with experience in research, development and central marketing. During his time with Aventis, Phil became Fungicide Resistance manager, where he was responsible for the corporate fungicide resistance management strategy until 2001. He was heavily involved with the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) becoming Chairman of the Central Steering Committee in 1991. He played a central role from the industry side, in the production of the European Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) Guidelines on resistance risk assessment for regulatory purposes. Phil has been involved with the BCPC on the Programme Committee and has always been keen to promote links between industry and academia. “I have been attending the BCPC Conference for 25 years and seen many people whom I have held in high esteem receive the BCPC medal. I never expected that I would join them,” said Phil. “Being awarded the medal is an honour that is all the more valuable as I have received it for doing a job I believe in.” Phil now works as an independent consultant. |
