THE SYMPOSIUM
The use of transgenic plants with resistance to insects and diseases, as well as genetically improved strains of biological control agents, offers new methods of crop protection which may reduce the use of pesticides. However, the rapid advances in these technologies and the deployment of transgenic crops has caused public concern over their safety and their potential impact on the environment.

The Monday Symposium will review these technologies, their commercial exploitation, their regulation and the potential impact on the environment.

Invited speakers will:

• Review the technologies, the facts and fallacies associated with the development of transgenic crops and improved biocontrol agents;

• Discuss commercial considerations in the development of these technologies;

• Raise the issues which relate to the regulation and safety of transgenic crops in relation to the public concerns over their deployment.
