A new feature to this year's, BCPC Conference - Weeds 2001 is a special interest Symposium that will run concurrently with the main conference on 13 and 15 November, dealing with issues relating to the effects of pesticides on soil or water quality.

A full understanding of the interacting processes that control the environmental dynamics of pesticides is essential in order to maximise their effectiveness while minimising the risk of environmental contamination. A major environmental concern at present is the potential for pesticides to effect soil or water quality.

Our knowledge and understanding of these issues have increased over the past few years with significant advances being made in quantitative prediction. For this to be successful, it is necessary to understand the basic processes that occur in soil (sorption, diffusion, degradation, water flow etc) and the interactions that take place between them. Also, we need to use our increased understanding to devise appropriate practical management strategies that reduce the potential for environmental contamination.

A special double session will run on Thursday 15 November and will consider 'Herbicides - Environmental Exposure and Risk Assessment'

This Symposium will provide a forum for discussion, and will hopefully identify those areas where knowledge is still limited and where further research is required.

 THE VENUE

This Symposium, although a discrete entity, will run alongside the BCPC Conference - Weeds 2001 at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel. Symposium delegates will be segregated from the main BCPC Conference, but will be able to use the facilities available to the Conference delegates and to visit the two Exhibitions. Registration to the Symposium does not allow access to the main BCPC Conference platform and poster sessions.

 THE EXHIBITION

Organisations with an interest in the content of this Symposium are invited to exhibit within the Trade Services Exhibition

 OFFERS OF PAPERS AND POSTERS

The Symposium is made up of platform presentation sessions and two complementary poster sessions.

The deadline for the Offers of Papers has now passed.

 IF YOUR PAPER IS ACCEPTED

Each session is managed by a Session Organiser who will be the point of contact for an author.

After an offered paper is provisionally accepted, the appropriate Session Organiser will make contact. A full draft of the paper will be required by 4 July 2001 with final scripts produced, in the required style, by 5 September 2001.

Any provisionally accepted paper that fails to meet these deadlines will be rejected.
