Latest news and opinions from BCPC BCPC Objectives |
BCPC (formerly known as the British Crop Protection Council) brings together as Corporate Members representatives of a wide range of organisations with an interest in furthering the science and practice of crop production. Between them they cover research, the agrochemical industry, the services, contractors, distributors, education, agricultural engineering, plant breeding/biotechnology, overseas development, government and regulatory concerns. BCPC sets out to inform and influence decision makers, the scientific community, farmers and their advisers and the general public about issues which affect crop production as a key component of agriculture, horticulture and food production. It does this primarily by producing factual strategy reports on key topics for decision makers and by holding international conferences and seminars. BCPC organises debates on topical issues by informed audiences and reports on the fora are recorded. It is spearheading a move to develop a common approach in Europe on crop protection issues. BCPC is a registered charity, its commercial arm is BCPE (formerly known as the British Crop Protection Enterprises), usually known as Enterprises'. |

When BCPC decided to separate its technical and commercial activities, it established a wholly owned subsidiary, BCPE (British Crop Production Enterprises), now usually referred to as Enterprises. Since then BCPE has had responsibility for managing BCPC Conference, symposia, publications and business membership.
BCPE is managed by a Board of Directors chaired by Dr Colin Ruscoe who reports to Enterprises' shareholder, BCPC. The other directors are Chris Todd (Managing Director), Dr Trevor Lewis, Mr Tom Bals, Mr Peter Moring and Mr Stephen Howe. In essence BCPC sets the overall technical policy and Enterprises converts it into commercial reality, generating funds which are ploughed back to BCPC through an annual covenant. The policy agreed by the Enterprises Board is executed by a small team directed by Chris Todd and comprising: Dr Colin Ruscoe, Exhibition Director and Frances McKim, Editor-in-Chief. Enterprises is always keen to broaden its activities and is interested in hearing from anyone about areas where it might be able to offer services such as publishing and conference organising. |

The flagship event managed by Enterprises is the annual international BCPC Conference, this attracts some 1500 delegates, more than half from outside the UK. Enterprises is also responsible for the management of the one or two international symposia run each year by BCPC and for collaboration with other organisations over joint events.
BCPC Publications activities are undertaken by Enterprises, planning and managing what is becoming an increasingly successful and commercially oriented publishing business. Conventional publications such as the international publication The Pesticide Manual. and The UK Pesticide Guide continue to sell well. |
